15. Old U.S. Mint (Museum) Web Site  - Located on Esplanade Ave. at Decatur St.
When the United States purchased the Louisiana Territory, the citizens spoke  only French.  Consequently, notes printed here were printed in English on one side and French on the other.  The most famous of these was the 'dix' note ($10.) which became known as a "Dixie" and led to the expression "land of Dixie" when referring to the Southern States where these notes became common currency.  This building is truly the "Heart of Dixie"!
